The current members of our feral family are:
THE FAMILY COW:
Ruby, the current alpha female (a tortoise shell with white feet and one ruby streak on her nose)
Opal (a full tortoise, no white - beautiful girl), Ruby's adult daughter, 1st in line to Alpha Catship
Cindy (a very cute calico), Ruby's other adult daughter, 2nd in line to Alpha Catship
Ruby's most recent litter, born in August 2009 (these are frequently seen in the care of Aunt Opal when Mom wants to get away):
Penny (a very pretty calico)
Garnet (a tortoise shell with white feet like her Mom, 3rd in line to the Alpha Catship)
Jack Adolfo (black and white male like Jack with Adolfo-type markings)
Jack Cowson (another B&W male with markings more like Grandaddy Cow)
Peach (a ginger kitten with one eye)
Lance Hahnson, a striped male, from Karen's last known litter. Lance because he looks like my Lance, Hahnson because he has the Hahn family's bold stripes.
Smudge Hahnson - another striped male with Hahn-type stripes, but with a very wide nose, and a dark smudge on his nose. I may change his name to Na'Vi, because his nose is like the Avatar's nose.
Sandy (an orange tabby adult female. we don't know her place in the family)
Bangs, a large B&W male, with black hair in bangs over his eyes.
Pearls (female? all black with 5 dots of white across her collar). A newcomer in early 2010.
Down the block, in Aunt Betty's group, are:
Sylvia (a long haired tabby), the alpha of her own group.
Adolfo (a tuxedo male) Sylvia's husband (he was TNR-ed) (they're adorable together... never apart, always touching or kissing, a really beautiful couple.)
Black Shuck (all black male) - Adolfo's sworn enemy. Aunt Betty has to take food down to the driveway for him because if he comes up to the porch, Adolfo tears his head off.
Tom (the square-jawed, tabby & white 2nd-in-line-to-Alpha male of the neighborhood, possibly the father of some of the babies)
Snake (male tabby with very fine stripes), may be same cat we were previously calling Stevie Junior
Half Tail - a very small, fluffy gray female with next to no tail.... a sort of bunny tail
"Also"... because he comes also.
Former Members:
Karen (assumed RIP): the original tabby alpha female, mother of Scrappy who became alpha after her and many litters of ferals for about 5 years. Karen is also the mother of Poor Lionel whom my mother adopted when he was found wheezing and unable to breathe on the lawn at 2 months old.
Aunt Rose (placed): a beautiful tortoise shell assumed to be Karen's sister, or close relative. When Karen had Lionel, she would leave him with Aunt Rose any time she wanted to get away. She and the other ferals would disappear for hours, and this pretty tortoise shell was always babysitting. She was captured for TNR and kept by the rescuer who fell in love with her.
Jet (RIP) - an all black female, mother of Patty & Sandra Piranha. This beautiful girl had feline immunodeficiency virus (cat AIDS) and was very sick at the time she had her two babies on my mother's porch. She left them for us, and shortly thereafter passed away. By miracle, Patty and Sandra are healthy. I hate to write sad stories, but I thought Patty and Sandra's mom deserved some recognition.
Hahn - a tabby male with very bold, swirling stripes and sort of crossed eyes. Karen's son. Missing, assumed RIP.
Scrappy (assumed RIP): tabby/white female, daughter of Karen, 2nd alpha female we observed to take over from her mother. Scrappy was the mother of many of the ferals after Karen including Sylvia and Ruby who are now two alphas on different parts of the same street. Like Sylvia, she had a bad lung condition.
Cowboy a.k.a. The Captain (RIP hit by car in July of 2008), white with black cow spots, daughter of Scrappy and Cow. Of our gang, the 3rd alpha female that we observed to take over from her mother. We first called her Cowboy because she looked like her father Cow, and we assumed she was a boy. One day she pushed herself to the head of the pack, looked me dead in the eye and said, "I'm the Captain of this group. You speak to me." In April 2008, at about 6 months old, way too young in my opinion, she had a baby on my mother's back step. She didn't know what to do with him, so she left him there. That's when we knew a)- she was a girl, and b)- it was time to get the TNR crew in here ASAP (TNR= trap, neuter, return). Cos once you take a baby off their hands, they'll turn you into an orphanage. Young, impulsive, bossy thing that she was, The Captain was the first one to jump in the trap and go get spayed. Poor Captain. She wasn't back from her vet visit a month when we heard she was hit by a car. Jack, god bless him, looks JUST like her. High cheek bones, long nose, wide orange eyes, even wears his black hair parted on the same side. :)
Chili (missing, assumed RIP) 2nd of 3 calicos from last litter born to Ruby before she was TNRed
Grace (placed)- 3rd of 3 calicos from Ruby's last litter. Grace was blinded by infection and taken to foster
care with a lovely lady named Janet who says Grace is the light of her life.
